8 things to do in Birmingham with kids this summer
Check out 8 things to do with kids in Birmingham every money savvy Brum parent needs to know:
Summer holiday time! School’s out, the kids are excited and you’re totally in the summer spirit. Where to now? There’s never a shortage of things to do with kids in Birmingham but when you’ve got the whole family to entertain, being money savvy is a must.
That’s why we came up with 8 pocket-friendly day out with the kids ideas to try out this summer in Brum. Sharing is caring, so here we go!
1. Summer activities for pennies at ThinkTank
ThinkTank, at Millenium Point, is one of these attractions that go out of their way to accommodate the younger visitors. Probably every parent in Birmingham has been there with the kids more than once (you included). If you are looking for a budget-friendly day out, it’s worth revisiting again this summer!
The kids’ events at ThinkTank this summer season are absolutely brilliant! Family LEGO building sessions for just £2.00, Planetarium show for £1.50, plus an Engineering Show, featuring a rocket demonstration, absolutely FREE. It doesn’t get much cheaper than this...
2. Treasure hunt in town with Treasure Trails
A walk in central Birmingham may not sound that exciting for the kids but add a treasure hunt to it and suddenly the idea has a much better ring to it. Treasure Trail Birmingham will take you on a clue-spotting, puzzle-solving adventure around the main shopping area in the city centre. Walking around Moor Street Station and The Bull Ring hasn't sounded this much fun in ages!
Best part about the Treasure Trails experience is that it’s perfectly affordable. The hidden treasure map costs only £6.99 and the whole family can use it. Who said your day out has to cost you and arm and a leg?!
3. Day out at Winterbourne House & Gardens
Fancy a lazy afternoon in beautiful stately home with stunning gardens? Make the most of the gorgeous weather we’ve been having recently on a family day out at Winterbourne House & Gardens in Edgbaston.
Interactive exhibits, all-year round children’s trails and a secret garden with willow tunnel and picnic tables for the kids the explore - there’s plenty of family-friendly fun to be had there.
The best part is: kids under 5 enter free!
4. Catch a tan on the beach
Speaking of making the most of the weather, there’s nothing better than a day at the beach! You’re probably thinking: “Wait a minute! I live in Birmingham, the seaside isn’t exactly in my backyard.”
Oh, well, you don’t have to go far and spend a fortune on petrol to enjoy sandy shores and clear blue water. Just 40 minutes up the M42, you’ll find Bosworth Water Park (near Nuneaton) with its lively Blue Lagoon Beach.
The Bosworth beach is free to use. All you’ll have to pay is the parking which is £2 per hour during the week and £2.50 on weekends. So, come on - bag a beach towel and sunscreen, and you’re all set! What are you waiting for?
5. Treat yourself at Chocolate Heaven Cafe
Let’s be honest, when the sun’s out and the heat’s on, managing the temperature turns into a bit of a struggle. When you’re feeling toasty, there’s nothing like a good, velvety ice cream to put you in a good mood again. If you’re after a pocket-friendly joint for cold summer treats in Birmingham, we’ve got just the place for you!
Chocolate Heaven Cafe is a small dessert bar in Northfield Shopping Centre where you’ll find chocolatey goodness, ice cream and cold treats to get you in the proper summer spirit. With reasonable prices, a convenient location (away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre) and some of the best sundaes we’ve ever had, this is a great place to take the kids for a treat.
6. Meet Dippy the Dinosaur in Birmingham
Brum has plenty of free events on offer for the kids this summer but the one we think trumps them all is the visit of Dippy the Dinosaur. The world-famous 70ft Diplodocus skeleton replica is spending the whole summer at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, as part of a UK-wide tour.
Seeing the giant Dippy is so popular that even though it’s a free event, you need to pre-book a ticket to get guaranteed entry. What can we say, the kids just love the Big Guy!
And there’s more - while Dippy is staying in Birmingham, there’s a free Dino Treasure Trail across the city centre. Hunting prehistoric dinosaurs across town will be a hit with the little ones and it won’t cost a thing!
If you haven’t yet had the chance to meet Dippy the Dinosaur in Birmingham just yet, you still have a month to do it. The event is on until 9th September 2018.
7. Go to the movies
Why not go for some old-school family entertainment? This summer at the cinema is all about detective stories - watch Gnomeo and Juliet return in partnership with Sherlock Gnomes, or join a human detective and his awesome four-legged partner in Dog Show.
Sounds fun but you’re just too scared to check the prices? Don’t give up on your popcorn-filled evening just yet! Cinemas are making an effort to find a place in the family budget. Odeon, for example, offers a great range of family tickets, discounts for kids and deals on those must-have snacks.
So, before you drop the movies from your list of things to do, have a look at the offers. And if you want to be really money-smart, go one step further and find yourself some hidden deals. Interested? Keep reading!
8. Catch a deal!
Let’s all agree that everything’s better when it’s on offer. When you’re out with the kids every little helps. So how about getting exclusive discounts and offers at some of the best family-friendly attractions near you (including most attractions featured in this article)! Try the Day Out With The Kids membership for £1 this month and get up to 50% off attraction tickets, 38% off cinema tickets and “kids eat free” offers in some of the top local restaurants.
