Elmhurst School for Dance
Elmhurst School for Dance provides a world-renowned centre of excellence for the training and education of classical dancers.
This includes giving students a sound knowledge of allied dance genres, a high-quality academic education and a principled, caring, living and working environment, to provide a solid foundation for their life-long living.
Elmhurst is unique among ballet schools in the UK due to its West Midlands-centred, regional approach, which is emphasised by our close association with Birmingham Royal Ballet. Our holistic provision also puts great store on high levels of pastoral care and our rigorous academic programme, with our students consistently achieving results that are above the national average.
Based in Edgbaston, Elmhurst is the only purpose-built vocational dance school in Europe, with a theatre, seven dance studios, academic classrooms and on-site, boarding accommodation.
We are committed to providing a holistic offer to support our students’ all-round wellbeing. The intensity of full-time dance training requires that students have access to a range of services so that they can adopt healthy, safe and balanced lifestyles, now and for the future.
As a school, our aim is for every young person, whatever their background or circumstances, to have the support to:
- Be healthy
- Stay safe
- Enjoy and achieve
- Make a positive contribution
- Achieve economic well-being.
We at proud to have a truly dedicated teaching staff, all of whom come from a professional dance background and teach with passion and commitment. Our association with Birmingham Royal Ballet is of immense benefit to the school, further enhancing what we offer our students. We are fortunate to welcome Birmingham Royal Ballet dancers and staff to teach classes, including pas de deux, on a regular basis. Students are given the opportunity to work in Birmingham Royal Ballet productions in Birmingham, on tour in the UK and abroad.
Academic tuition is delivered by experienced and well-qualified teachers. This aspect of the school’s work is of central importance and students regularly achieve outstanding success in public examinations at GCSE and A-level.
Form tutors monitor the progress and welfare of each student, and pastoral care is provided through an extensive network of academic, residential and vocational staff. Internal academic assessment takes place throughout the year and parents receive regular written reports.
In addition to annual parent-teacher evenings, parents are also welcome to contact the school at any time over academic matters.
A-levels not only complement and enrich Elmhurst’s vocational training, in the event of a career cut short by injury or a change of aspiration, they constitute a reliable insurance policy. If a student decides to go to university after sixth form, every support is given by the school.
